Philosophies From The Past – Virgil

Hey Everyone! I hope y’all are having a great day!

Yet another “prepossessing” tag! Thank you Rory from A Guy Called Bloke and Doodlepip’s Adventures for nominating me for this interesting challenge – “Ancient Authors”.

Publius Vergilius Maro

My apparent choice is VIRGIL – traditionally ranked as one of Rome’s greatest poets. A philosopher, master poet and Rome’s treasure, he indeed was a “magician” of sorts.

Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 BC – September 21, 19 BC), usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He wrote three of the most famous poems in Latin literature – the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. A number of minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, are sometimes attributed to him.
Virgil’s poems, especially the Aeneid, have lived on for over 2,000 years and are still being read and analyzed to this day! Excerpts of his poems were even found on the excavated walls of Pompeii. He was an inspiration to countless authors who followed him. Dante, the author of The Divine Comedy, chose Virgil as his guide through the Inferno’s nine levels of hell. The author Melinda Corey wrote a new introduction to a recent reissuing of Longfellow’s translation of The Divine Comedy. She believed Dante chose Virgil because the poet represented everything the author wanted to be – the greatest poet of his time.

Well, it’s difficult to choose a few out of his massive collection, specially when you are dealing with one of bests! Here are some of my favorites –

“That man is the most loyal who aims at the noblest motive, and that motive the public good.”
“Fortunate is he whose mind has the power to probe the causes of things and trample underfoot all terrors and inexorable fate.”
“What each man feared would happen to himself, did not trouble him when he saw that it would ruin another.”
“They can conquer who believe they can.”

RULES

1 Choose the author or philosopher (it should be one from the Ancient Time). Don’t know anyone? Google it. It shouldn’t be so hard.
2 Choose 3 quotes of this author/philosopher. The country of origin – doesn’t matter (Egypt, Greece… Italy). Add any info or explanation if you like.
3 Share those quotes and nominate 3 to 6 people. (Ops, that’s not obligatory)
4 The title for the post? Choose something cool. I know you are smart enough.

Hi friends! Care to do this? I tag – Megha’s World, Sparkklingthoughts and MUSINGS.

Let’s pass-on the FUN folks!

Love,
