Healthy Food Series – 7 Age-Defying Super Foods

Hey Everyone! It’s time for the weekly Healthy Food Series on iScriblr! *Happy Tuesday*

Keeping up with the fad of being cognizant of the health benefits and clean regime, here comes my newest aid to a “healthful lifestyle” that not only keeps you appraised with the newest food trends but also helps you lose those extra pounds (and feel good inside out!)
Well folks, today’s post for Healthy Food Series comes with a twist, or more precisely with some tips and tricks to pause the adverse effects of AGE and growing old! Yes, you heard me – we are talking about eating right and postponing the consequences of added years to our life’s calendar! *no-botox required*

1 WILD SALMON

Salmon is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure and decrease risk factors for heart disease. It contains the antioxidant “astaxanthin” that benefits heart, brain, nervous system and skin health. Consuming salmon may also help you control your weight by reducing appetite, boosting metabolic rate, increasing insulin sensitivity and decreasing belly fat. Salmon, in addition to all the above, is also an excellent source of several B vitamins, which are needed for energy production, controlling inflammation and protecting heart and brain health.iScriblr_salmon

2 PLANT BASED MILK

If your tummy has been rounder than a puffer-fish, it’s time to cut foods that cause bloat from your diet. “As we age, our bodies can’t break down lactose as efficiently. When we can’t efficiently digest something, it tends to cause gas and bloat, which is the opposite of a flat stomach. Avoid dairy foods, and you’ll likely see some improvement!” advises Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN of Real Nutrition NYC. Can’t give up your early morning cereal sessions? You don’t have to! Just opt for these better-for-you milk alternatives.iScriblr_milk

3 RASPBERRIES

Not only do raspberries contain cancer-fighting “phyto-chemicals”, these vibrant textured berries also contain an impressive eight grams of fiber per cup, which can help you feel fuller longer in addition relieving constipation. Raspberries also contain antioxidant polyphenols called “ellagitannins”, which can help reduce oxidative stress.iScriblr_RASPBERRIES

4 BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries are popular berries that serve as a great source of vitamin K. Blueberries also contain antioxidant polyphenols called “anthocyanins”, which reduces oxidative stress, thus lowering the risk of heart disease in both healthy people and those at high risk for the disease. In addition, blueberries may also improve other aspects of heart health by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol in the blood, reducing the risk of heart attack and enhancing the function of arteries.iScriblr_BLUEBERRIES

5 EGGS

“Despite incorrect assumptions about eggs in the past, eating them has no association with heart disease. In fact, the healthy fats within the yolks can help you feel fuller longer and curb cravings”, explains Kayleen St. John, RD. “Not to mention, “choline” – a belly fat-blasting nutrient – is only present in the orange part of the egg, rather than the whites, that most dieters tend to avoid!” Eggs score high on a scale called the satiety index, which means that eggs are particularly good at making you feel full and eat fewer overall calories. Also, they only contain trace amounts of carbohydrates, which means they will not raise your blood glucose levels.iScriblr_EGGS

6 AVOCADO

This fatty fruit has healthy monounsaturated fats that can help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad fat that clogs arteries) and placate a growling tummy. According to a study published in Nutrition Journal, people who munched on just half a fresh avocado with lunch reported a 40 percent decreased desire to eat for hours after. Avocados and avocado oil are high in monounsaturated “oleic acid”, a heart-healthy fatty acid that is believed to be one of the main reasons for the health benefits of olive oil. Avocados are also high in antioxidants, including “lutein” and “zeaxanthin”. These nutrients are very important for eye health and lower your risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.iScriblr_AVOCADO

7 WATERMELON

“Though it may sound counter-intuitive, the high concentration of water in watermelon can actually reduce the water retention that leads to puffiness around the eyes,” says Baumann. “And because watermelon is low in sugar – well, compared to many other fruits – you don’t have to worry about “glycation”, the chemical reaction that compromises collagen and leads to lines and wrinkles.” The two vitamins in watermelon – A and C – are important for skin and hair health. Vitamin C helps your body make collagen, a protein that keeps your skin supple and your hair strong. Vitamin A is also important for healthy skin since it helps create and repair skin cells. Without enough vitamin A, your skin can look dry and flaky. Both “lycopene” and “beta-carotene” may also help protect your skin from sunburn!iScriblr_watermelon

So there it is folks! Some “super foods” for an awesome, amazing “age-less” YOU!

**NOTE : PLEASE BE SURE OF YOUR ALLERGY CONDITIONS and PROMINENCE before trying any “super-food” out!**

Well, it’s a fact that as we age, it becomes increasingly more difficult to combat chronic diseases, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and keep the belly fat at bay. But contrary to what you may believe, your health isn’t actually doomed to descend downhill with every fleeting year! Sure, you may not be able to lose pounds like you did in your twenties, but you certainly can add specific foods – like the ones above – to your diet in your quest to turn back time and look great!

Remember folks, choosing these “youth-promoting” foods will not only equip your body with the cancer-fighting, wrinkle-smoothing, and metabolism-revving vitamins and nutrients it needs to help you look and feel young and vibrant, but, also will help you save money on future health expenses. (That might occur if you are a little too callous about your eating habits at this moment!)
I say, let the “Old Father Time” wait for now, coz we aren’t getting old anytime soon!

Here’s to clean living and a healthy lifestyle! Cheers!

Love,

    1. Wow, home grown berries are the best – fresh and yum!❤

Ikr!! I love me some MILK too, but yeah, once I reach the age when I have problems digesting it – I would make that healthy change! 😉

    1. Hahaha..😋😋

I too love me some (read – lots) fruits, any time of the day!❤ It just means that we wont “wrinkle” soon! Lol 😉

  2. Thank you for sharing an insightful post. ❤️ I love the almond milk better than the soy milk. I don’t like the taste of it hehe but my daughters love it. I would like to have the coconut milk but I can’t find any in our country. Maybe they’re sold out. But there’s this health store which sells rare items that I haven’t explored yet. 😉

    1. Hehe.. Thanks Winnie, I am glad that you liked the post!❤

I still have to make the change of switching on to plant based milk.. Hopefully soon! 😉

      1. Yes! You’re welcome, dear Richa! I loved your healthy food series. ❤️

My husband has not yet totally switch to plant-based milk. We buy soya for the two kids because they are lactose intolerant.

        1. Oh, I see.. I love milk so it’s kinda difficult for me to make that change.. But hopefully in coming months I will switch to almond/soy milk.. (lets see) 😉

          Thanks Winnie!❤️

  3. This was a great checklist for me 👍 I’m doing well!!! Salmon is one of my favorites and we eat berries every morning.

    1. It shows Aixa! Your pictures and you are so FLAWLESS! #foreverYoung ❤

I am slowly and gradually making these life changes.. Hopefully soon! 😉

  4. Glad these are all in my life, some more than others. Eggs have to be scrambled or omelet. I like coconut or macadamia milk- and almond milk is okay, too.

    1. Wow.. That’s awesome! #foreverYoung ❤

I still have to make the change of switching on to plant based milk.. Hopefully soon! 😉

  5. I definitely do most of those foods minus the eggs and salmon…but that’s okay because I definitely make up for it in some of the other super foods out there 😉😁😆😊

      1. That would be awesome…I’m a bit of a vegan and vegetarian super food nerd…I’ve read so much interesting health articles on various food benefits for pure pleasure..lol🤣🙃😊

        1. Hahaha.. Pure pleasure it is!😍

Hopefully by next week I shall have the post up! Btw.. I am a vegetarian too but I eat eggs and salmon! Lol 😉

    1. Oh.. Ok! That’s a bummer..
Well, I have a stubborn appetite (gut) – no allergies, no intolerance. 😉

      Aww.. Thank you so much!❤

  6. I love all of them except salmon. Norway is known for salmon of excellent quality but I don’t like it unfortunately. We have raspberry bushes in the garden and I love watermelons. I eat watermelon every day during summer, can’t get enough 😋 Thanks Richa, for this great post!

    1. I have recently started eating Salmon and am in the process of still developing the taste for it – for now I eat it once in a month kinds! 😉

I love watermelon too – like no one business! 😛

Thank you for stopping by Isabelle, really appreciate it!❤

  7. It’s almost impossible to find wild salmon nowadays tho, we in Sweden haven’t seen it for a while. Only Norwegian (grown on corn 🌽 lol) . Sadly but true

    1. Oh really! That’s so sad! 🙁
I’m apparently new to eating fish (and Salmon is the only fish that I eat), plus, slowly developing the taste/appetite for it! 😉

      1. I’m eating a lot of fish (mostly wild or at least certified) but haven’t seen wild salmon in ages here. Most of Norway salmon is grown on farms, but they say it is safe to eat. I know they (Norway) caught only 600 tons wild salmon in 2018 and it’s not much … I mean in a year. But there’s a lot of other fish 🐠 & we can always go fishing at some lake/river lol fresh fish soup? Anyone? :))

        1. Haha.. I would any day LOVEEEEE to accompany you for fishing!🐠 🐠
And – “FISH SOUP” – YES, PLEASE!!!! 😉

  8. Fantastic list! I hope to incorporate almond milk into my diet. I love fruits though no problem there! I always get told I look ten years younger than I am!🤣💖

  9. Does all the benefits that you stated go with all kinds of salmon? I really think I could reap the benefits of eating it, also how many times a week would you eat it ?

  10. A terrific post Richa, l eat some of that listing – avocado, wild caught salmon and eggs, sadly currently l can’t eat that much fruit due to the sugar content – but l occasional rebel 🙂

As for the plant based milks …mm, no they are all absolutely awful! I have tried all in the link and l can safely say never again – now chicory coffee is just black 🙂
