Norling Restaurant : Highway on My Plate, McLeodganj

Hey Everyone! Tashi Delek!

It’s time for the much awaited “travelling updates” and stories of my recent voyaging! Hope you all are as excited about it, as me?

I begin my “virtual tour” of our 20 days and 6 cities trip to India by talking about FOOD! (Yup, once a foodie, always a foodie!)
Well, we kick started our journey by parking our taste buds at a “small wonder” called Norling Restaurant located in McLeodGanj, which is a quaint-little suburb in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Also known as “Little Lhasa” or “Dhasa” (a short form of Dharamshala used mainly by Tibetans) – it is the headquarters of The Tibetan government-in-exile and official residence for His Holiness Dalai Lama. Known worldwide as a destination for ecotourism, meditation and spiritual studies McLeodGanj for sure is more than what meets the eye! It’s a foodies’ paradise too!

Known as one of the BEST places to devour authentic Tibetan food in entire India, as recommended in the “renowned” TV program Highway On My Plate, Norling Restaurant, hence seemed just fitting to be at and explore. Located in the corner of the downtown market, it’s a nice “cozy” place to try out Tibetan cuisine. Nothing upscale or fancy – just plain, simple “delicious” food!

Food/Drinks ordered –  A bowl of THUPKA, a Chicken THENTUK NGOPA or ” Tso-Menphen”, a single TINGMO, and spinach MOMOS washed down with KOMBUCHA SYMBIOTIC DRINK in Hibiscus and Mint Rosemary flavors.

Delectable “THUPKA!” aka “fully loaded” Tibetan noodle soup.

Chicken “THENTUK NGOPA” or ” Tso-Menphen” – This is a pasta dish – The pasta is the same as in the popular Tibetan Thenthuk, but instead of being in soup, it is stir fried with sha (meat) and phing (beanthread). (PS – If you are vegetarian, you may add some sha-mong (mushroom) instead of sha).
“TINGMO” – A steamed bread in Tibetan cuisine. It is sometimes described as a steamed bun that is similar to Chinese flower rolls.

“MOMOS” aka stuffed DIMSUMS. (Had to use a stock-photo, as my “hungry” Huz devoured them all even before I could get my camera out!)

Overall, it was an amazing experience with everything from MOMOS and THENTUK NGOPA to THUPKAS tasting super awesome! Appetizing, delightful and delish – the food undeniably was scrumptious and pleasantly authentic. Even though this place is not very “fine-dine” kinds; the crude rusticity and simplicity is what makes Norling Restaurant pretty unique and distinctly recognizable. Highly recommended for the “experimenting foodies” who have an appreciation for genuineness. With matchless quality and unequaled authenticity of the THUPKA  bowls – it is a perfect “little” place to relish good food and have a great time. The dishes were true to their name, and the quantity enough to please the “piglet” within you.
Only wish – if they could have a restroom! Sadly, one has to use the public “roadside” bathroom, which of-course mars the good experience.

**HIGHWAY ON MY PLATE (HOMP) is a weekly travel and food show that airs on the channel NDTV Good Times since 2007. It is anchored by food enthusiasts and childhood friends Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma, who have together traveled more than 1,20,000 kilometers across the length and breadth of India over the course of seven years in search of memorable eating experiences. The show follows a regular format where the hosts (or “The Highwaymen”, as they are affectionately referred to on their television website) travel to different food joints and eateries across the different states of India, mainly through the National Highways of India.

So there you go folks! That’s all about our date with the toothsome Tibetan cuisine! *happy tummy*
