Mix-tape From The Past

Hey Everyone! I hope y’all are doing wonderful!

Yay, yet another exciting tag! *happy dance*
Thank you so much Jenna from The Sunshine Artist for tagging me for the super fun Fun Friday Flashback Tag! I truly appreciate it and I appreciate you! Guys, go check out her amazing blog and give her a follow. With bounteous optimistic and heartfelt musings on her blog, she is undeniably awesome!

PS – I am pretty late with the tags and I really am sorry for being so impassive about them! For the one’s who’ve tagged me, I’ll be covering y’all soon, pretty soon!

ABOUT THE TAG

Every Friday Jenna will post a questionnaire, photos, quotes and/or a poem on a specific “topic” taking us back in time. Today’s travel through time is all about a musical playlist, retro style!

Let’s turn back in time and get the fun started –

From listening to old-school music on my Papa’s “prized” turntable to having my own little “Sony” walk-man as a gift on my 5th birthday – Music and me, were meant to be! When everything failed, when the world seemed like a place not meant for me, when the “rebel” in me acted out and when things were lost and found in love – MUSIC always, always came to the rescue! Ah, nostalgia!

1 THE SIGN – ACE OF BASE (1992)

“I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes, I saw the sign.. Life is demanding without understanding!”

For the days when you open up your eyes to “see” the real world. Reminding us to be aware and mindful of our surroundings and relationships, this song celebrated “awakening!” Still one of my all time favorites, this song made me “ready for the REAL world!”

2 WHAT IS LOVE – HADDAWAY (1993)

“I don’t know why you’re not fair.. I give you my love, but you don’t care!”

One of my absolute favorites! Although the song is an upbeat dance track, the lyrics are rather gut-wrenching, as Haddaway sings about trying to love a girl who won’t love him back. Perfect for the “heartbreak” kinda days!

3 YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE – NEW RADICALS (1998)

“You’ve got the music in you.. One dance left.. This world is gonna pull through.. Don’t give up.. You’ve got a reason to live!”

Encouraging you to hang on despite bleak times, this song was for the days when the world was too much to grasp for me! Inspiring me to not give up on my “young dreams” this song was my “daily dose” of optimism and hopefulness.

4 I’M TOO SEXY – RIGHT SAID FRED (1992)

“I’m too sexy for my shirt.. Too sexy for my shirt.. So sexy it hurts!”

Haha.. In all honesty, just because my parents HATED it! *wink-wink*

5 WANNABE – SPICE GIRLS (1997)

“If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.. Make it last forever, friendship never ends.. If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give.. Taking is too easy, but that’s the way it is!”

Remember when you would spend hours with your best middle-school girlfriends recreating music videos, dancing, and singing like your little 13-year-old hearts never had before? Well, that was “Wannabe” for me and my girls!

6 GEORGE MICHAEL – FATHER FIGURE (1988)

“I will be your father figure.. Put your tiny hand in mine.. I will be your preacher teacher.. Anything you have in mind!”

This song (which describes a “give-it-all” relationship in which George Michael wants to be “everything” to the person that he loves) – has a particular resonance to anyone and everyone who has ever been in an all-consuming romance. For the times when your “teenage” love defies all practicality and wit!

7 MICHAEL JACKSON – BEAT IT (1982)

“Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it.. No one wants to be defeated.. Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight.. It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right..”

I think Michael was intending the song to address how people everyday come to these situations where they want to cause violence, but their better judgement wants peace. And the chorus coming in strong with “Beat it!” is what I assume is Michael’s judgement to not incite violence, but just walk away no matter the circumstance. For the times, when you “wisely” chose your battles and just walk away from all the drama!

8 SAVAGE GARDEN – CRAASH AND BURN (1999)

“When you feel all alone.. And the world has turned it’s back on you.. Give me a moment please to tame your wild-wild heart!”

I ABSOLUTELY love this song! It’s a great song to listen to when you just need to brighten up and realize that things have to get worse before they get better, but just remember that they “do” get better. May not be soon, but they will eventually.

9 MADONNA – FROZEN (1998)

“You’re so consumed with how much you get.. You waste your time with hate and regret. You’re broken.. When your heart’s not open!”

I love this song because it is dark, and it expresses the dark side of love – the depression you go through, the hurt, the heartache, the breaking-up! It’s about opening that other person’s heart, trying to get in there, with them. Form when I was a little grown up, trying to “mend” what was broken.

10 2PAC – CHANGES (1998)

“It’s time for us as a people to start makin’ some changes.. Let’s change the way we eat, let’s change the way we live.. And let’s change the way we treat each other.”

This is one of my favorite songs and it will always have a very special place in my heart! Breaking away from the stereotypes, this song talks about standing up for each other, and for what is right. For the times when my heart contemplated and my head speculated the wrong-doings around the world.

There you go folks – a sneak peek of my “love affair” with music! Thank God for “songs” – I was never unaccompanied in my life!

“The times you lived through, the people you shared those times with — nothing brings it all to life like an old mix tape. It does a better job of storing up memories than actual brain tissue can do. Every mix tape tells a story. Put them together, and they can add up to the story of a life.”
